Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is commonly used for managing pain and inflammation in dogs and cats. The action mechanism of Piroxicam is to hinder the secretion of prostaglandins, thereby bringing relief from fever, pain and inflammation. It could also be combined with other drugs in the treatment of transitional cell carcinoma- a type of bladder cancer in dogs.

Possible Side Effects

Possible adverse reactions include stomach and intestinal ulcers and bleeding, dark or tarry stools, vomiting, loss of appetite and peritonitis. The potential for ulcers increases when Piroxicam is used in combination with corticosteroids, aspirin or phenylbutazone. Piroxicam can decrease kidney function and cause a sudden severe injury to the kidneys. Blood clotting may be impaired because of Piroxicam’s effect on the blood platelets. As with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, this drug can cause liver injury with an elevation of liver enzymes in blood tests.

Piroxicam may interact with medications. Consult your vet to determine if other drugs could interact with Piroxicam. Such drugs include diuretics or ACE-inhibitors (enalapril, benazepril, quinapril).

Precautions
