Glipizide is used to lower the blood sugar level in diabetics. It does not cure diabetes. It will usually need to be a life-long treatment.

Possible Side Effects

Hypoglycemia (blood sugar dropping too low) may occur on this medication—regular blood-glucose monitoring is essential. Nausea and appetite loss have also been reported; giving this medication with food may be helpful. Alert your veterinarian immediately if your cat becomes disinterested in their food or eating.

Drug & Food Interactions

Notify your veterinarian of any other medications your pet is taking while your pet is receiving glipizide, including vitamins and supplements. The effects may be lessened if used with chloramphenicol, furazolidone, sulfa drugs, NSAIDs and warfarin. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors, certain diuretics (“water pills”), and cimetidine may change the effectiveness of Glipizide.

Precautions

Tell your veterinarian if your cat has kidney or liver disease, thyroid disease, a serious infection, illness or injury, or if the cat needs surgery. Tell your veterinarian if your cat is pregnant or lactating.
